The Basics of Neurological Rehabilitation
Neurological rehabilitation is based on the idea that people living with neurological conditions should be able to live happy, fulfilling lives. It’s not focused on “curing” the condition–although medical management of symptoms can certainly play a role–but rather on ensuring that patients have as much functionality as possible.
Neurological rehabilitation seeks to achieve this goal through three basic approaches:
- Reducing disability (for example, taking medication to manage symptoms)
- Providing new skills and strategies to maximize activity (for example, using a mobility aid or wheelchair)
- Altering the environment to minimize experiences of handicap (for example, installing grip rails in the shower)
The exact makeup of your neurological rehabilitation team will vary based on your specific condition and your individual needs and goals. For example, if your condition doesn’t affect your ability to eat or communicate, you won’t need to work with a speech therapist. Similarly, a person of faith might choose to work with a spiritual leader as part of their program, whereas someone else might prefer their program to remain secular.
What to Expect from Neurological Rehabilitation at iMove PT
Developing an effective neurological rehabilitation program involves heavy involvement from you, your family, and your care team. While your condition will obviously influence the specifics of your program, so will your personal goals.
When you come in for an initial consultation, we’ll thoroughly review your medical history and perform any necessary functionality tests, looking at things like mobility, communication needs, etc. After that, we’ll work closely with you on setting reasonable, achievable goals for the program.
Typically, we begin by setting a long strategic goal. For some, particularly those who suffered an injury, this goal might be to return to their lifestyle before the injury occurred. For others, it may be to retain some comfort and independence while living at home with caregivers.
Once we’ve set a long-term goal, we’ll look at the smaller goals necessary to achieve it. This is also the stage where we’ll begin building your rehabilitation team, pulling from the professionals on staff at iMove PT. This team will work together to help you achieve your goals–and the process is very collaborative!
For instance, if you’re struggling to eat meals, your occupational therapist will help you improve the fine motor skills necessary to hold utensils while reinforcing the chewing and eating strategies you’re working on with your speech therapist. Another example would be your medical care team helping you with exercises prescribed by your physical therapist.
