History of the NEUBIE
What in the heck is the NEUBIE? No, this isn’t a typo. Please don’t get this confused with a newbie! NEUBIE stands for Neuro Biological Electrical Stimulation. This amazing electrical stimulation unit became FDA-approved in September 2017 and has been available to physical therapists since the late 2010s. Those physical therapists that utilize the NEUBIE in their practice report amazing patient results after only a couple of visits with their patients.
The NEUBIE’s inventor was Garrett Salpeter. Garrett has degrees in both Physics and Engineering. Garrett, a high-level hockey player, was searching for a way to deal with his own injuries. He wanted to find a way to influence the nervous system to help recover from his own injuries. No matter your injury, the nervous system is controlling your recovery.
Garrett found that using Direct Current stimulation could remap his nervous system and have a profound effect on his own healing. Garrett then created his own technology and the rest is history!

How is the NEUBIE Different Than Traditional Electrical Stimulation Therapy?
You may be wondering, how does the NEUBIE compare to electrical stimulation therapy? I’m sure 99% of the PT clinics in existence have some type of electrical stimulation unit already.
Several distinctions can be made, but the most important is the waveform that is used. This unique waveform of the NEUBIE has a neurophysiological effect, which allows it to produce such impressive results that may not be possible with traditional devices.
Almost every other electrical stimulation device uses an alternating current. When the devices are turned up to higher levels, they can negatively affect the patient’s neuromuscular system – causing protective co-contractions.
If you have ever received electrical stimulation to your quadricep muscle you know what I’m talking about. What happened when your PT turned up the estim machine? Yes, you could see a muscle contraction in your thigh muscle. But do you think you could do any functional movement when the traditional stim unit was turned up this high? I would say doubtful.
While E-Stim can provide benefits by mechanically pumping blood and other fluids, it can actually cause more problems with the neurological control of movement. Traditional e-stim devices reinforce dysfunctional or compensatory movement patterns that can prevent your body from healing properly and add to the painful cycle of chronic pain.
Likewise, e-stim can minimize movement efficiency and reduce a patient’s mobility.
The NEUBIE is engineered to use Pulsed Direct Current, so the NEUBIE electrical stimulation method has the opposite effect! The NEUBIE preferentially sends signals into your nervous system.
This ability allows the NEUBIE to produce sensory input into your nervous system while producing less motor output. The central nervous system will then respond to this signal by relaxing or fighting against it, and this is the foundation for many neurological reprogramming protocols.
The take-home message here is that the NEUBIE is unlike any other electrical stimulation on the market. I like to tell patients that a muscle is “dumb”. A muscle doesn’t know what to do, it is the nerve going to the muscle that is the controller of the muscle function. By positively affecting your nervous system, your body will become more efficient and once difficult daily tasks will start to become much easier.
